Measuring Happiness at the United Nations

Experts on the study of happiness convened at the United Nations Thursday to discuss “The Paradox of Income and Happiness,” a look at how research is helping governments measure happiness—and how that is contributing to better outcomes of well-being in populations. Jeffrey Brez, chief, NGO Relations, Advocacy and Special Events, opened the session by explaining that happiness has become a topic of global interest.From Bhutan to Britain“In the past few years, we have seen so much more interest around the [International Day of Happiness],” Jeffrey said, referencing the March 20 event that was established by the U.N. General Assembly in 2012. “This attracts people from around the world.”Thursday’s briefing was designed to focus on how the science and research-based findings on happiness can be applied by governments, nongovernment organizations, schools and individuals to create a happier planet. Mary-Mitchell Campbell, Broadway conductor and director of Finding Neverland, served as moderator for the event and discussed her experiences working with the poor in India. It was there, she said, that she learned some truths about happiness—including that money has very little to do with true happiness.Money still can’t buy happinessAlejandro Adler, a member of the International Expert Well-being Group, echoed Mary-Mitchell’s discovery, pointing out that while the gross domestic product has become synonymous with progress, there are very marginal increases in happiness between countries, “which means increasing GDP does not make countries happier.”In reality, added Ami Dar, founder and executive director of the website Idealist.org, becoming happier requires really just one simple decision: to do the things that make us happy.“We seem to know what makes us happy, and we’re all experts at what makes us unhappy,” he said. “So the real question is, why don’t we do what we need to make us happy?”Learning to be happyHappiness learned early in life will last forever, and the opportunities to change young lives through positive education were illustrated by both Kaiping Peng, Ph.D., and Hector Escamilla, Ph.D. Presenting evidence on how positive education has been implemented in China and Mexico, respectively, they said it can help students find purpose and meaning—something that will positively change their future and shape their decisions.“It’s very popular in China,” Kaiping said. “We are changing the Chinese mindset about education, about happiness, about well-being.”A truly global perspectiveOn a global level, more countries are embracing the idea of happiness as part of public policy. Friends With Benefits

Last weekend I had the unique experience of getting a face cramp. I’d laughed so hard and so long that I’d taxed my smile muscles to their breaking point. This giggle attack was induced by a weekend with my graduate school friends. We try to get together for a weekend away once a year. Being with friends is invigorating This weekend is so important to me that I make it a priority. Every year I come back home feeling reinvigorated. I have more inspiration for work (we’re all science journalists), more patience with my children and more energy and focus. This is without a doubt the most dedicated time I get to spend with friends, so, it’s not surprising that I get such a surge of well-being from it. In fact, having good friends is becoming widely accepted as an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The Mayo Clinic names it an important component to healthy living in its lifestyle guide. It includes tips on how to make friends as an adult, which can be a challenging endeavor, and how to maintain the relationships we already have. Positive social relationships By taking time to reconnect with my grad school friends, I not only impact my sense of well-being but also build up physical benefits that may help keep me from catching colds, bolster my efforts at healthy lifestyle changes, and possibly increase my longevity. Scientists have long wondered about the biological mechanisms linking friendships and better living. Many studies point toward lowering stress levels. In these studies scientists measure the amount of the primary stress hormone cortisol in the blood stream. People with more friendship connections have lower levels of cortisol in their blood. This means they have lower stress levels, which is linked to better overall health. Friends for better health Even something as physiologically fundamental as our heart rates can be affected by our friends, as a Canadian study showed last fall. Jean-Phillipe Gouin and colleagues found that international students had more changes in their heart rhythms when they started college in a new country than those students who were able to make social connections within the first few months. Variation in the rhythm between heartbeats is a good thing. It shows that the heart is adaptable and cardiac health is good. A decrease in variability isn’t. The international students all showed a decrease when they first moved abroad. But after some months, that decrease subsided for students with more friends. Their social connections were, in essence, protecting their hearts. The chicken or the friendly egg? With all of these studies there is some question of causality. Is it possible that people who are healthier are likely to attract more friends just as our friends are likely to keep us healthier? Absolutely. But science is incrementally proving just how social interactions affect our well-being. Did You Spring Forward Into Exhaustion?

By now we’ve all reset our clocks for the start of daylight saving time, but we wish we could hit snooze bars on our internal biological clocks. Besides costing an hour of sleep, the time change wreaks havoc with our circadian rhythms—even threatening our well-being, researchers warn.Resetting the inner clock“An hour seems like a minor change, but moving the clock ahead one hour can be very stressful or disruptive for some people, particularly for those who are already sleep deprived,” warnsDr. Jeffrey P. Barasch, medical director of The Valley Hospital Center for Sleep Medicine in Ridgewood, New Jersey.Our circadian rhythm, the biological clock located in a part of the brain behind the eyes, determines when we feel alert and when we are sleepy, he says. The clock needs time to adjust to synchronize our bodies with the daily light-dark cycle of the world.The lost hour: Where does it go?With daylight savings, a 7 a.m. wakeup becomes 6 a.m. Previously sunlit mornings are dark—at least for a while—slowing the clock adjustment and leaving us feeling tired for more than the one day on which the clocks change, Jeffrey says.Some German researchers believe ourbodies never adjust fully to daylight saving time.“When you change clocks to daylight saving time, you don't change anything related to sun time,”lead researcher Till Roenneberg of Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich said in a 2007 study of time-change disruption. “This is one of those human arrogances—that we can do whatever we want as long as we are disciplined. We forget that there is a biological clock that is as old as living organisms, a clock that cannot be fooled. The pure social change of time cannot fool the clock.”Be careful out thereOn average, we sleep 40 minutes less than our normal times on the Sunday nights following the springtime changes, theNational Sleep Foundation says. Fort Worth Kicks Off Blue Zone Initiative

The city affectionately known as “cowtown” may be looking for a new nickname after last weekend’s kickoff to the Blue Zones initiative, an effort to make Fort Worth, Texas a more sustainable and healthier place to live, work and play. Fort Worth is the largest city to take on the well-being project to date, boasting roughly 790,000 residents. According to the Blue Zones organization, cities in California, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Minnesota and Texas are currently participating in the project with great success. Healthy communities invite people and businesses “Blue Zones is an important tool for Fort Worth because it makes it easier for families to make healthy choices and to be active,” says Mayor Betsy Price. “Healthy communities make for engaged, vibrant cities that attract businesses and families. It's another tool in our toolbox to make Fort Worth stronger.” Blue Zones is a well-being company designed to help people live longer and better lives. It is the brainchild of Dan Buettner, the New York Times best-selling author of The Blue Zones, Thrive and the upcoming The Blue Zones Solution. Dan, a fellow at National Geographic and keynote speaker at the Forth Worth event, is considered an expert on longevity. Through his research, he has pinpointed areas of the world where people live the longest and why. What it will take To become a Blue Zone, Fort Worth has pledged that over the next five years, the city plans to make healthier options easier for people to find in restaurants, grocery stores, schools and at worksites, while also implementing other changes in the community. “It’s not about being a nanny state,” Betsy told the crowd. “It’s about offering choices that will make it easy for you.” Some of those options include more bicycle-friendly areas and bike-sharing programs, signs pointing to healthy food in supermarket aisles and designated Blue Zones menus at local eateries. What makes some people healthy? “When it comes to longevity, there is no silver bullet and no easy fix,” Dan says. He went on to explain that the Blue Zones project is a different way to look at health. Instead of shaming an individual to have the discipline to get healthier, they focus on what he calls a “life radius” to make the decision to be healthy easier. “We set up a healthy swarm of nudges, so people don’t even think about it,” Dan says. “They are just nudged into being healthier every day.” Next steps to certification While this is just the beginning stage for Fort Worth in obtaining its Blue Zone Community certification, Betsy is excited for the changes. The expected results include a reduction in healthcare costs, an increase in the quality of life and economic improvements for individuals, business and local government. “We are already an incredible city of great character, made up of great characters.” What Fort Worth must do to be a certified Blue Zone city: Individuals: At least 20 percent (or 111,000) of people living or working in Fort Worth ages 15 and older must sign the Blue Zones Personal Pledge and complete one pledge action; Worksites: A sufficient number of employers that represent 85,000 employees must become designated Blue Zones Worksites®; Schools: At least 25 percent (or 44) of public schools from the Fort Worth, Keller and Northwest ISDs must become designated Blue Zones Schools®; Grocery Stores: At least 25 percent (or 14) of the city’s 54 grocery stores must become designated Blue Zones Grocery Stores®; Restaurants: At least 25 percent (or 59) of the city’s 259 independent or locally owned restaurants must become designated Blue Zones Restaurants®; Community Policy: The community must adopt a minimum of policy goals contained in the Blue Zones Community Policy Pledge regarding the environment, food policy, and tobacco policy. If you guessed Florida, sorry, you’re not even close. California? Not even in the the top 10. Hawaii? You’re getting warmer: The Aloha State is No. 2. The highest-ranking U.S. state in the just-released annual Gallup-Healthways well-being poll is … Alaska. Who knew caribou jerky and sub-zero weather could be so much fun? Explanation of the rankings According to Dan Witters, Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index Research Director, Alaska's ranking is not such a surprise. “Alaska is no stranger to our top 10 rankings,” according to Dan. “In fact, it has been in the top five on three previous occasions, but this is its first year at No. 1.” The five indicators of well-being used in the poll were: purpose, positive social interactions, financial security, a sense of community and physical health. This year, Alaskans were feeling good enough to knock North Dakota off its 2013 perch as No. 1. Dog sledding is good for your health Says Dan, “Alaskans benefit from very good basic fitness and healthy choices.They top the nation in exercise, with 64 percent reporting that they exercise at least 30 minutes at least three days per week, and they have the lowest diabetes and cholesterol rates in the U.S.” Despite (or perhaps because of) a sparse overall population, Alaskans also report a very strong sense of community. Smoking, obesity: bad for your health At the other end of the scale, West Virginia came in at the bottom for the sixth consecutive year. Poor physical and mental health may be a contributing factor (or a consequence of other factors such as economics). According to Dan, “Residents of West Virginia carry the second-highest obesity rate (34 percent), the highest depression diagnosis rate (27 percent), the highest diabetes rate (16 percent), and the highest cholesterol rate (32 percent) in the nation.They also are heavy smokers, with 29 percent who report being a smoker.” Below are the Top 10 States for Well-Being in 2014. 6 Easy Ways to Improve Your Social Life

When we spend time with family, have drinks after work with friends, or even reconnect by phone with an old friend, we don't need a scientific paper to tell us we feel great! Recent research by psychology professor Barbara Fredrickson shows that even casual positive interactions with acquaintances can cause a major lift in spirits. And the more of these little happy hits we get, the better. In fact, relationships are so important in positive psychology, they make up the "R" in PERMA (the model of thriving developed by Dr. Martin Seligman). We know that spending time with people we care about improves our well-being, and yet some of us may need a bit of a nudge to break us out of our hermit tendencies. Here is your nudge, in six parts: 1. Invite a co-worker out for lunch If someone is new to your workplace, make them feel welcome by inviting them for lunch. Or maybe you have the kind of office where most people eat while working at their desks every day. Gather a group together and go out one Friday—sit in the sunshine and chat about anything but work. 2. Meet a friend for coffee We all fall into ruts and routines; we tend to see just the same few people over and over—often just our families and co-workers. What about that friend you like but never get around to seeing? Give him or her a call and arrange a coffee date. Catch up on what's new while strengthening your relationship. Facebook is great, but nothing beats actual face-to-face contact for staying in touch. 3. Host a dinner party Sure, this is a little more ambitious, but you don’t have to be Martha Stewart to have a few friends over for dinner. Start small with perhaps just four or five people. Make as much of the meal ahead of time as you can, and be sure you have enough essentials on hand, such as napkins, chairs and silverware—preferably not when the party is five minutes from starting. If you don’t like to cook much, buy high-quality prepared food such as rotisserie chicken or cooked salmon from the market. Toss a salad, buy a baguette and some wine and you’re golden. 4. Join the club Many studies, as well as anecdotal evidence, show that people who enjoy the sense of belonging and camaraderie you get from a group or community gain immense benefits in terms of well-being—even recovering more quickly after a stroke or other illness. It doesn’t matter if it’s a religious congregation, a book club, a sports team … getting together with like-minded people on a regular basis is good for your physical and mental health. 5. Go solo Don’t let a lack of compadres stop you from hitting the town. So many restaurants now have counters or bars where you can comfortably sit as a single and watch the goings-on all around you. And even if they don’t, you have the right to occupy a table and enjoy a great meal as much as any family of six. Bring a book or tablet and read if you feel you need something to keep you occupied while you eat. As for going to movies, plays or museums alone, for many this is the only way to go! Enjoy the entertainment and your own company, while at the same time putting yourself out there in the public sphere and inviting the possibility of meeting someone with similar interests. 6. Turn off your computer The incredible conveniences of 21st-century technology are undeniable. Yes, you barely need to leave your house to buy pretty much anything under the sun. You can order up food to be delivered, and download movies right to your computer or TV. But doing so has a cost in human interaction, or lack thereof. According to research from the University of British Columbia, even so-called “weak ties," casual interactions like the kind that occur at your local Starbucks or corner market, are important for social and emotional well-being. (This dovetails with Barbara Fredrickson's research, mentioned above.) Instead of buying something online, go to a bookstore or record shop. If a store is independently owned, you have a better chance of real interaction and recommendations from the people working there. Get out there and be among the people!

Are you trying too hard to be happy? It’s possible, says Todd Kashdan, Ph.D., professor of psychology and senior scientist at the Center for the Advancement of Well-Being at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. And when it becomes our sole objective, he cautions, we can lose sight of the bigger picture.Are you trying too hard?Shannon Bradley-Colleary, a Los Angeles-based writer and mother of two, says the constant messaging to be happy sometimes makes her feel like she can’t measure up. And even though she experiences moments of gratitude daily, she says there is still an underlying pressure to be happier.“It seems like some of us are just born happy, and others of us struggle to achieve it, perhaps being happy and not even knowing it,” she says. “I think I live between happy and striving.”The evidence is out thereResearch has shown us that happy people sleep better, live longer, have larger (and more active) social networks, make better bosses, make better decisions and even make more money. Yet experts say trying to master happiness is stressing us out.“About 90 percent of the people I talk to say their objective is to live a happier life,” Todd says. “People want a life of vitality with meaning, where the essence of who they are can come out through the work they do.”But there is a limitIn his new book, The Upside of Your Dark Side, co-authored with Robert Biswas-Diener, Ph.D., Todd looks at how emotions like anger, guilt, anxiety and sadness can be beneficial—and ultimately even boost our long-term happiness. Instead of trying to be happy every waking moment, we should aim for balance—finding pleasure in the things we enjoy and learning from the obstacles we overcome.“Happiness is not about people wrapping themselves in bubble wrap and avoiding anything that doesn’t fit with that [outlook],” Todd says. “It’s about working on what you can control. It is scientifically honest and freeing to let go of the burden and pressure to be happy all the time.”Working hard to be happyFocusing on just one thing—whether it’s money, fitness or happiness—often makes us feel like we don’t measure up, says Jamie Gruman, Ph.D., founding member and current chair of the Canadian Positive Psychology Association and associate professor in the department of business at the University of Guelph.“People today compare themselves to others more than ever before,” he says, pointing to social media and pop culture as constant reminders. Although the current emphasis on happiness has given us a larger toolkit for cultivating joy, it may also cause us to focus on an end goal of happiness instead of enjoying life as it happens, however it happens.“All of our emotions serve a purpose, and that means we’re going to have days where we’re sad,” Jamie says. “It’s that fluctuation in our emotions that helps us evolve and lets us enjoy our happiness more.”When happiness backfiresAt the Canadian Conference on Positive Psychology last July, Jamie presented results of his study on the correlation between depression and the need for happiness. He found that subjects who spent a great deal of time thinking about happiness experienced less overall satisfaction with their lives and more depression, but those who participated in activities that made them happy had the opposite response.How much is enough?One of the challenges many people have with happiness is that there’s no set way to measure it.“It’s not as though we can tell people ‘When you’re this happy, that’s good,’ ” says Christine Frank, a Carleton University Ph.D. student whose current research focuses on the benefit of anticipating both positive and negative outcomes to situations. She says that, like so many things, when people hear they can be happier, it can lead them to question if they are doing as much as they should.“I think the idea of being happier is always desirable—similar to being science richer or healthier—even if you consider yourself a happy person,” Christine says. However, our happiness levels fluctuate from one day (or hour) to the next and are influenced by things we can’t control, like traffic, weather or how much sleep we got the night before. When we set our happiness standards high, and then fall short of them, negativity sets in.Allow yourself the full range of emotions“One study found that the more people strived to obtain optimal levels of happiness, the more disappointed they felt about their achievements,” Christine says. “In another study, when people were instructed to feel as happy as possible while listening to a piece of music, they reported feeling less happy.”“It’s kind of like being in love—you have to let it happen,” Jamie says. “You can’t make yourself feel something, and those feelings aren’t going to be the same every day. The objective should be to have a good life.”Doing things you enjoy will do the most good, he advises. Whether that means climbing mountains or sewing quilts or spending time with family or pets, people who actively pursue things they enjoy will fare better than those whose main focus is on learning how to be happier.“When people allow themselves to experience their full range of emotions, in the long run, they end up being much happier.”

Top 10 Countries for Wellbeing

It’s good to be a Panamanian. In fact, according to the Gallup-Healthways Global Well-Being Index, life is so good that Panama leads the world in four out of the five elements of wellbeing: purpose, social, community and physical. Of those polled, 61 percent of the respondents say they are thriving in three or more elements. The only category Panama doesn’t lead is financial wellbeing.Money isn’t everything, though, especially in Latin America. Six of the top 10 countries considered thriving in wellbeing are in Central or South America, with the citizens flourishing in at least three of the wellbeing elements.
