Shelf-Care For Kids: Santo & Sheepy — Helping Kids Make Sense of Life Through Play

Few activities out there offer as many benefits for young kids as reading together. Beyond building language and literacy skills, books create meaningful opportunities for connection and imagination, while creating a catalyst for conversation about emotions and life’s moments — both big and small. The time spent reading with young children can feel like magic! Whether it’s part of a bedtime routine, a trip to the library, or revisiting a story you’ve read for the hundredth time, books help shape how kids understand themselves and their world. With so much competition for shelf space, it can be tricky to find stories that are both engaging and meaningful. That’s the goal of Shelf-Care For Kids — to spotlight books that are fun to read while supporting kids’ growth, curiosity, and well-being.

The Adventures of Santo & Sheepy by Luz Mack is a charming series of stories blending imagination, humor, and social-emotional learning. The books center on a young boy named Santo and his best friend, Sheepy, a stuffed sheep gifted to him by his parents. Sheepy joins Santo through the ups and downs of daily life — from navigating friendships and independence to working through uncomfortable feelings, such as jealousy and loneliness.

The series was inspired by Mack’s own son, who found comfort in a stuffed sheep during the isolation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sheepy became a beloved family companion and a way for her son to process the emotions and challenges of a rapidly changing reality. Mack uses her background in psychology to weave difficult and often necessary childhood experiences into playful stories that reflect how kids naturally use their imagination to make sense of their lives and process their emotions.

WHAT KIDS WILL LOVE

Children are bound to fall in love with Sheepy, the mischievous stuffed sheep who conveniently only talks to Santo. Sheepy is quite the character — often causing mayhem around the house, demanding a cheeseburger (a stuffed sheep’s favorite food, of course), or sneaking his way into Santo’s backpack to make sure he’s always got a friend in tow.

Each story is playful, relatable, humorous, and includes an experience kids will relate to — making everyday life feel a bit more like an adventure. What makes the books particularly enjoyable to read aloud is their rhythm. The text has a natural flow that holds the attention of little readers and makes it a fun read for parents too. Rhyming text paired with expressive illustrations and plenty of silly moments keep pages turning naturally, while Santo and Sheepy’s adventures encourage kids to see the possibilities for imagination in their everyday lives.

BEYOND THE BOOK

The Santo and Sheepy stories reflect what child psychologists have studied for decades — the powerful benefits of imaginative play. The National Institutes of Health examined a large body of research on play and child development spanning twenty years and concluded that imaginative play supports emotional intelligence, creativity, self-regulation, communication, social skills, problem-solving, and empathy. Wow, that’s quite a list!

Additional research from International Research in Early Childhood Education supports the concept that imaginative play allows kids of all ages to explore emotions indirectly, separating feelings from reality — helping them process experiences, practice self-control, and navigate social situations in a safe (pretend!) environment. In many ways, that’s exactly what Sheepy provides for Santo, a companion who helps him work through life’s challenges one adventure at a time.

These stories can serve as an invitation for kids to expand on their own imaginative play. A favorite stuffed animal or toy could become a silly sidekick, navigating anything from a trip to the grocery store, the first day of school, or trying a new food together. Caregivers can encourage this kind of imaginative play by asking questions like “What do you think your stuffy would do?”, “What is your stuffy’s favorite food?”, or “If your stuffy was feeling sad, what could they do about it?” Playful conversations like these can spark emotional expression and creative problem-solving long after the book has been put back on the shelf. You may just discover that a cheeseburger-loving sheep has been living in your house all along.
